Small Wonders in Sea Glass
“Jar of Gems”
The ocean is a miracle, both constant and ever-changing; and the best part is, you never know what will come from it. Literally anything is possible! That said, since moving to Korea, sea glass collecting has been an amazingly satisfying hobby. Like the ocean that shaped, bruted, nurtured and carried each piece, the possibilities are endless in what you might find. Collecting sea glass, and especially the act of strolling the beach being completely open to said possibilities, also helps calm and sharpen my mind in the quest for what to write next. And although I have buckets and buckets of fine Pacific sea glass, mostly in shades of aqua, I would like to share, in response to requests from a few of my readers, a few unique pieces I had the fortune to find.
This earl grey butter jar to the left contains tiny gem-quality pieces of glass, including a perfectly-preserved round marble, that are completely smoothed over with no chipping or inclusions. I’d like to make jewelry out of these at some point.
So, without further ado, check out some incredible pieces below!
“Heart of Te Fiti” found on Sokcho Beach, Sokcho, Korea–Note: This piece, which I found 2 years ago, similarly resembles the “Heart of Te Fiti” in the Disney production, “Moana.”
“Grande” found on Eulwangni Beach, Incheon, Korea–Note: The Chinese character etched into this piece means “big,” hence the name, “grande.”
“Dish” found on Muchangpo Beach, Muchangpo, Korea–Note: The rough texture and surface graining on this piece indicates that it has been ocean tempered for an estimated period of 40 years or more.
“Bubble in a Bubble” found on Sokcho Beach, Sokcho, Korea– Note: Although this piece is technically not sea glass, it’s still glass; it’s pretty; and I found it on the beach.
“Fruit Snack” found at Oido Marine Park, Oido, Korea–Note: This piece, found 4 years ago, spurred my ambition to collect sea glass. Yellow glass like this is also extremely rare.
“Dragon’s Neck” found on Muchangpo Beach, Muchangpo, Korea–Note: This piece appears to have been soft once, and twisted in its molten state to also fold in several small rocks and sand grains. Definitely a story in this one!
And….the search continues. Thanks for reading!
